Dermal fillers are treatments which involve injecting a substance known as hyaluronic acid underneath the balls of the feet to provide relief from pain.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are injections which are introduced into the balls of the feet to provide relief from pain and reduce discomfort underneath the foot. When the foot is in a standing position the metatarsal heads located around the ball of the foot are protected by a structure known as the fibro-fatty pad. As a person ages this fibro-fatty pad diminishes, meaning the additional pressure which is placed on the feet during standing causes greater discomfort. This discomfort is increased when wearing high heeled shoes however it can be a problem even in flat shoes.
During the procedure local anaesthetic is injected into the area so that no pain is experienced when the fillers are being introduced.
What podiatry related conditions can dermal fillers help with?
Dermal fillers can be to provide pressure relief and reduce the levels of pain associated with the following conditions;
- Ball of foot pain due to diminished fat pad or prominent metatarsal heads (toes)
- Painful corns
How do dermal fillers work?
Dermal fillers can be used in two ways;
Cushioning – dermal fillers can work by providing additional cushioning into the balls of the feet. Dermal fillers are made up of a natural sugar known as hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally within the body and has many purposes, one of which is producing a ‘plumping’ effect in the area it is introduced. It attracts and binds to water hydrating the skin and giving it volume.
Treatment for corns – dermal fillers can be used to provide relief from pain caused by corns. Corns are concentrated areas of hard skin which can be the result of excessive pressure. Injecting hyaluronic acid underneath the painful corn provides extra cushioning, reducing the amount of pressure the area is subjected to and preventing the corn from recurring.
